Scrapbook, 1899 - 1903

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 4
Identifier: 1.4

Scope and Contents

The scrapbook contains blank hospital forms, correspondence, drawings, news clippings, notes, and photographs. Two portraits of Ralston are store loose at the front of the book. Ralston added hand-written captions to many of the images, sometimes identifying people and places by name. It contains many images of Ralston, her fellow nursing students, Children’s Hospital physicians, staff, instructors, and patients. It records many scenes of daily life for the nursing students, life on the wards, and in the surgical arena. The captions and items are often serious, showing special cases at the hospital, but they can be humorous as well. For example, a form for “Permission for Autopsy” on Edith Pollard Ralston is pasted onto the rear endpaper of the scrapbook. It is signedby James Warren Sever, witnessed by John Ryder, and dated September 11, 1902, the date of Ralston’s graduation from the Training School for Nurses. The scrapbook covers her entire time at the school starting in 1899 and continues into 1903, the year after her graduation.
