Division of Nuclear Medicine
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of materials acquired after Dr. Treves retired in 2011. They consist of general departmental correspondence, meeting minutes and reports as well as supporting documents in the establishment of new laboratories, applications and documentation for funding of a wide variety of studies, several subject files, and one piece of radiation monitoring equipment. Starting in the late 1970s, much of the division’s work was dedicated to research, especially in the areas of angiography and cardiac function measurement using Iridium-191.
Many of the files relate to studies on this topic and the development of clinical applications for the isotope. Another large segment of the records in concerned with Positron Emission Tomography (PET), the acquisition of PET equipment and the development of a laboratory
specializing in small animal imaging.

Historical Note
In 1967, the Division of Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine was formed under the Department of Radiotherapy (later Radiology) at Boston Children’s Hospital. Prior to this the only apparent Nuclear Medicine specialist at the hospital was Arthur Salomon, who consulted at Children’s from 1961 to 1967. In 1969, Melvin Tefft, MD, was made Chief of the Division of Nuclear Medicine, but he retired in October of the following year. Stanley J. Adelstein, MD, took over after Tefft’s departure and hired Salvador Ted Treves, MD. As he came on board in 1970. At this time the two parts of the division were split into the Division of Radiation Therapy and the Division of Nuclear Medicine. Treves was made Associate Chief of the Division of Nuclear Medicine, and he was the first full time physician in Nuclear Medicine at Children’s. The newly created division moved into the second floor of the Bader Building, the former home of the Polio Clinic. A joint program in Nuclear Medicine was also created with the division at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital.

Arrangement
The collection was arranged into five series:
Series I, Administrative Materials, contains applications, article drafts and reprints, correspondence, manuals, meeting minutes, and reports. It contains a segment of materials on the Information Technology Evaluation Committee (ITEC).
Series II, Equipment, contains a large amount of material on the acquisition of equipment and the development of the Small Animal Imaging Laboratory (SAIL), a later MicroPET Research Facility, and PET equipment acquisition for these projects. The materials consist of
correspondence, business plans, demonstration of need applications, grant proposals, letters of support, plans, reports and vendor quotes.
Series III, Studies, contains documentation relating to studies in 51Cr-EDTA, Copper 62 Radiopharmeceuticals, Iridium-191m, Osmium-191, Positron Emission Tomography (PET), and Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT). This is concerned mainly with funding acquisition, protocol development, and reporting to funders, though some of the material relates to human study patient consent, and reporting on study results.
Series IV, Subject Files, contains files on krypton, radiation dosage guidelines, technetium-99m, and xenon 133.
Series V, Objects, consists of one CTC-4 device made by Radiation Monitoring Devices, Inc.
Acquisition
The records were transferred to the Hospital Archives in 2013 from the office of Dr. Salvador Ted Treves, Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School, Founder and Former Chief, Division of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging at Boston Children’s Hospital.
