Historical Note

The Children’s Hospital Training School was founded by the Sister’s of St. Margaret in 1889. What started out as a two-year program extended to a three-year program by 1895. In 1907, the training school officially became the Children’s Hospital School of Nursing. Affiliations with other hospitals were established with the New England Deaconess Hospital and the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital during the years of 1915-1920.

By 1917, the Sisters of St. Margaret withdrew their affiliation with the hospital and the school. In 1921 the Simmons College-Children’s Hospital five-year B.S. degree program began and ran until 1937. The Children’s School of Nursing was among the first to be “accredited by visitation” by NLNE. In 1953 they received their first accreditation by the new National League for Nursing and remained fully accredited till its closure. By 1964, Northeastern University had also replaced Simmons College for basic core classes.

In 1974, the school of nursing was informed of their eventual closure and their resources were to be merged with Curry College to develop an articulated A.D.-B.S. program in Nursing. The last graduating class of the Children’s Hospital School of Nursing was in 1978; by that point the school could boast 2,369 graduates to its name.

The alumni association formed in 1900, under the name of the Nurses Alumnae Assocation. The group held reunions, produced newsletters, sponsored local events, luncheons, picnics and dinners and helped keep the nurses in contact with one another. In 1989, the School of Nursing Alumnae Association celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the school on May 5, 6, and 7, with a gala, outings, meetings, class reunions, and the unveiling of a bronze statue of a nurse and child created by Patricia L. Verani for the Prouty Garden at Boston Children’s Hospital. The Alumnae Association formally disbanded in 2008.
