Scope and Contents

This collection consists of three series.

Series I, Administrative files, 1968-1993, undated (bulk, 1971-1979), contains subject files collected by Myra Fox in her work as a Child Life Specialist. This series is comprised of committee meeting minutes, correspondence, guidelines, evaluation scales and reports to the administration.

Series II, Article reprints, 1956-1979 (bulk, 1970-1980), is a reference collection amassed by Fox in her work. Material in this series predominantly focuses on the psychology of the hospitalized child and his/her family.

Series III, Objects, undated, contains a pair of Swift Bed Spec Model No.791 prism glasses in a carrying case used for play therapy on Division 29. The outer box is labelled “Property of the Children’s Activities Service – Return to Miss Fox – Ext.2971, Room 3105.” The glasses case is marked: “Playroom Div. 27” on one side and “Playroom Div. 39 / These glasses belong to the Div. 39 Playroom – Miss Fox” on the opposite side.

Biographical Note

Myra Fox was a pioneer in the field of Child Life Specialists. She began her career at Children’s Hospital in 1964 as a “Play Lady” and eventually founded the Department of Child Life Services, where she was Director until her retirement in 2008. Fox was featured on NBC Nightly News for her work as a Child Life Specialist. Her work inspired a character in the book Curious George Goes to the Hospital.
